Overview
If you are unable to hear Bluetooth HFP phone call audio, Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, Siri / Google Assistant, turn-by-turn navigation, or system beep tones through your Pioneer AV receiver, it is likely due to speaker mode configuration or missing front audio connections.
This Tech Tip explains how output routing works in both Standard and Network speaker modes and how to diagnose missing HFP and CarPlay / Android Auto voice audio.
Speaker Mode Output Configuration
Standard Mode
-
Front Left / Front Right
-
Rear Left / Rear Right
-
Subwoofer
Network Mode
-
High Left / High Right
-
Mid Left / Mid Right
-
Subwoofer
Explanation:
-
Standard Mode is designed for a 4-speaker system (front and rear) or a 6-speaker system that includes subwoofers.
This mode provides full-range audio from both front and rear outputs, making it ideal for most factory and aftermarket systems using conventional amplifiers or speaker layouts. -
Network Mode is intended for a 3-way active speaker system, consisting of High (Tweeter), Mid (Midrange), and Low (Subwoofer) outputs. Each channel is filtered by the built-in crossover to reproduce a specific frequency band.
-
When Network Mode is selected, the “Rear” outputs are reassigned as Midrange channels, and the Fader control is disabled.
-
Voice-related audio (HFP phone call, Apple CarPlay™, Android Auto™, Siri, Google Assistant, navigation, and beep tones) will output through the Front channels in Standard Mode or the Mid (Rear) channels in Network Mode, depending on which mode is active.
Reset Tip:
If the receiver was previously set to the wrong Speaker Mode, the only way to correct it is to restore the radio to factory default settings.
After rebooting, the Speaker Mode Selection Screen will appear, allowing you to reselect Network Mode or Standard Mode.

Function-Specific Audio Routing
| Function | Output Path | Output Type | Channels Used | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| HFP Phone Call Audio / CarPlay / Android Auto Voice | Front audio path only | Front L/R RCA (Low-Level) + Front L/R Speaker Wires (High-Level) | Front Left / Front Right | All phone and voice-related audio plays only through the front outputs in Standard Mode, or the mid outputs in Network Mode. |
| Siri / Google Assistant / Voice Commands | Same as HFP | Front L/R RCA + Front L/R Speaker Wires | Front Left / Front Right | Follows the same path as phone call audio. |
| Navigation Route Guidance | Same as HFP | Front L/R RCA + Front L/R Speaker Wires | Front Left / Front Right | Turn-by-turn voice prompts use the same output path. |
| System Beep Tones | Same as HFP | Front L/R RCA + Front L/R Speaker Wires | Front Left / Front Right | Beep tones share the same front output path. Disabled in Network Mode. |
| Bluetooth A2DP (Music Streaming) | All full-range outputs | Front & Rear RCA (Low-Level) + Front & Rear Speaker Wires (High-Level) | Front L/R + Rear L/R | A2DP music outputs from both front and rear outputs (RCA / Speaker Level). |
Integration Notes
If an aftermarket interface or wiring harness does not use the front outputs (RCA or speaker level)—commonly found in Dodge, Jeep, or Chrysler applications—
you will lose all voice-related audio, including:
-
HFP Phone Call Audio
-
Apple CarPlay™ / Android Auto™ Voice Prompts
-
Siri / Google Assistant Responses
-
Navigation Route Guidance
-
System Beep Tones
Meanwhile, Bluetooth A2DP music will still play through the rear outputs (RCA or speaker level).
This can create the false impression that the system is functioning normally, even though all phone and voice functions are silent.
Amplifier and Configuration Issues
When using an OEM factory amplifier or external 4-channel amplifier:
-
If Front RCA inputs are not connected, or the amp’s input selector is set to 2CH or Rear Only, there will be no HFP / CarPlay / Android Auto / Navigation audio output.
-
A2DP music still plays through rear channels, masking the issue.
-
If the receiver is set to Network Mode instead of Standard Mode, the front outputs carry only high-frequency content — phone or navigation audio may sound faint or be completely missing.
Phone Settings to Verify
Before troubleshooting the receiver, confirm these Bluetooth settings on the paired smartphone:
For iPhone (iOS):
-
Go to Settings → Bluetooth → Pioneer_XXXX → ⓘ and verify both Phone Calls and Audio are enabled.
-
Under Settings → Privacy & Security → Bluetooth, ensure permissions are enabled for Maps and Siri.
-
Confirm Do Not Disturb or Focus Mode is not silencing call audio.
For Android:
-
Open Bluetooth Settings → Pioneer_XXXX (gear icon) → verify both Phone Calls and Audio toggles are on.
-
Check that Media Volume Sync is enabled and phone volume is turned up.
-
Disable Do Not Disturb or any call-routing / recording apps that may reroute HFP audio.
If all phone settings are correct and there is still no call audio, continue with the troubleshooting steps below.
Troubleshooting: No HFP / CarPlay / Android Auto Phone Call Audio Present
Step 1: Test the Front Output Path
-
Source the Radio Tuner and play a station.
-
Go to Audio Settings → Fader.
-
Fade the sound completely to the front L/R speakers.
-
If no radio tuner audio is heard, the Front outputs are inactive or disconnected — this is also why no HFP / CarPlay / Android Auto audio is present.

Step 2: Check for Fader Control
-
If you see Balance but no Fader in the Audio Settings, the receiver is in Network Mode, not Standard Mode.
-
In Network Mode, the Fader is disabled because the Rear outputs are reassigned as Midrange channels.

Step 3: Verify Speaker Mode
-
From the Initial Setup Menu, select Speaker Mode → Standard for 4-speaker systems.
-
If Network Mode is required for active crossover systems, remember that all HFP, CarPlay™, Android Auto™, Siri, Route Guidance, and Beep Tone audio will now output through the Mid (Rear) channels, not the Front.
Important:
If the receiver was set to the wrong Speaker Mode, the only way to correct it is to restore factory defaults.
After reboot, the Speaker Mode Selection Screen will appear, allowing you to reselect Standard or Network Mode.
Summary
-
Standard Mode: HFP, CarPlay™, and Android Auto™ voice-related audio output through Front channels (RCA or speaker level).
-
Network Mode: HFP, CarPlay™, and Android Auto™ voice-related audio output through Mid (Rear) channels (RCA or speaker level).
-
If no phone call audio is heard, confirm Front channel operation, Speaker Mode selection, amplifier input settings, and Bluetooth HFP configuration.
